BOMBSHELL: $5.3 MILLION Paid for MASSIVE Piece of MARS - The Most Valuable Meteorite Ever Sold!
Because who needs a beachside vacation or a solid retirement fund when you can own a chunk of Mars? I mean, it's not like that's a ridiculous amount of money or anything ($5.3 million, anyone?). But hey, if you're going to waste your cash on a rock from another planet, at least make sure it's a really big one – 54 pounds and 14 inches long! That's like... a small cat or something.
I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that this meteorite was ejected from Mars after an asteroid hit the planet. Like, can you imagine the Martian equivalent of a 9-1-1 call? "Hello, emergency services? I've got a problem! A big rock just came out of nowhere and took off with a piece of my surface! Send help... or at least send something that won't get stuck in your gravity."
And don't even get me started on the whole "only 400 officially recognized meteorites hail from Mars" thing. That's like saying you're one of the exclusive few who gets to own a piece of history – if by "history" you mean "a giant rock that fell out of space". I guess it's worth it, though, because this thing is basically a mini-Mars in your living room (minus the toxic atmosphere and lack of breathable oxygen). Just think of all the Martian-themed dinner parties you'll host!
